Self Defence

Self defence refers to any action taken by an individual to protect himself/herself from injury when attacked by another. It mainly refers to hand to hand combat by civilians and in military situations. There are several types of self defences – unarmed, armed and the use of personal alarms.

In unarmed self defence, a person used the parts of the body to protect it from harm. Some of the various strategies for doing so involve martial arts. Ju Jitsu is the art of using grasping and striking techniques. Karate involves punching, kicking, striking and open handed techniques. Taekwondo is the most popular form of martial arts self defence that involves mainly kicking techniques. Wing Chun specializes in bringing an opponent down by using the pressure points in the body. Krav Maga is a self defence technique that originated in Israel, which really doesn’t have any rules. It is basically lethal.

Armed self defence refers to using a firearm or a lethal object to harm an opponent. In some countries, it is legal to carry a firearm for self defence purposes. However, other type of objects can be considered tools, such as body spray, mace, pepper spray and sticks.

Most homeowners practice self defence by installing alarm systems in their homes. These alarms trigger a signal that is relayed to the police or a security company when a would be burglar makes an attempt to break in. There are also small personal alarms that a person can use when attacked. They can be as small as a keychain and emit a high pitched sound when one pushes the button. This sound will attract any passersby and frighten off any attackers.
